Social integration has vanished in Luhmann’s systems theory and in the theses on individualization. The differentiated structure of modern society offers only complexity, which the individual has to synthesize in his biography. Integration is reduced to a merely individual achievement. Against this the article emphasizes the importance of the state for social integration. On several levels it clamps the different inclusions: culturally polity and culture are fused and inclusions are based on certain cultural attributes and abilities; legally one has to pass over the threshold of citizenship to gain full access to all institutions; intermediary the political order sets an institutional frame for conflicts between interest groups; legitimatory the acceptance of a whole arrangement of differentiated orders is balanced by the legitimation of the political order; eventually the life-course is ordered by political regulations making possible biographical expectations and continuity.  相似文献

Social perception and stereotyping have been important issues in social and cross-cultural psychology for most of the 20th century. After briefly reviewing its history, the current article discusses social perception and stereotyping from the interpersonal and the cross-cultural perspective. Specifically, these issues are presented along a dimension ranging from intraindividual, to intragroup, to intergroup perception. First, the discussion of interpersonal perception emphasizes social perception in a face-to-face context. Though this section may appear to be technical and complicated to some readers, this level of detail is necessary to elaborate a most basic version of the componential approach to interpersonal perception. Second, the section on social stereotypes discusses social identity theory and the ingroup and outgroup homogeneity effects. Finally, the article concludes with a discussion of lingering concerns in research on social perception and stereotypes.  相似文献

Conclusion My basic point is simple: OSHA, in its zeal to ensure safer workplaces, should remember that its primary task as a regulatory agency is to correct market failures and should tailor its regulatory solutions to respond to market failures efficiently. The most efficient solution to a market failure will generally be the least restrictive regulatory alternative, for such an alternative maximizes the ability of individual actors to engage in wealthcreating private ordering. With respect to inadequate ergonomic protections in the workplace, the culprit market failure is not a negative externality but is — if there truly is a market failure — systematic informational inadequacies on the part of employees (about ergonomic risks) and employers (about available precautions). The most narrowly tailored regulatory solution, and therefore the one most likely to preserve the wealth-creation benefits of private ordering, would focus on providing the systematically under-produced information to the relevant actors.  相似文献

This article examines several factors related to immigrant incorporation that have been ignored in previous studies of voting participation. We add various immigrant‐related variables to a model that controls for individual resources, social incorporation, institutional barriers and contexts of political mobilization. We find little support for straight‐line assimilationist theories of immigrant adaptation. We also find that coming from a repressive regime has no significant effect on voting and that living in areas with Spanish‐language ballots does not increase the likelihood of voting among first generation Latinos. Our results also suggest that antiimmigrant legislation has a positive effect on participation among first and second generation immigrants. Overall, the immigrant‐related variables introduced in our analysis add significantly to the existing theoretical knowledge on voting participation in the United States.  相似文献

This article analyses the relationship of ethnic prejudice and discriminatory behavioral intentions in Germany. We utilize two representative surveys conducted in 2002 and 2004 ( N = 2,722 and 1,383, respectively) as well as a longitudinal study with three annual measurement points (2002–2004; N = 825). Results show that prejudice is substantially correlated with the respondents' reports of their own discriminatory intentions ( R = .33 to .49). Controlling for additional psychological variables, the cross-lagged, longitudinal analyses support the causal hypothesis that prejudice leads to discriminatory intentions. Additional influences on discriminatory intentions—intergroup threat and intergroup contact—are substantially mediated by ethnic prejudice. Thus, a practical implication of these results is that the reduction of intergroup threat and increment of intergroup contact may well lead to both reduced intergroup prejudice and to less discriminatory behavior .  相似文献

A significant literature has evolved in the last 40 years investigating regional variation in lethal violence, with most studies focusing on Southern homicide rates. One question posed by this research involves the effect of structural conditions on violence in the context of a regional culture of violence. We take a unique approach to this problem by detailing two distinct conceptual processes, amplification and attenuation of structural influences on violence. We then investigate regional variations in the effects of resource deprivation on White homicide in rural areas—a context in which the Southern culture of violence should be most prominent. The results of our county-level analyses of census and homicide data around the year 2000 reveal that White homicide rates are higher in Confederate South states and that resource deprivation has a positive association with White homicide. The effect of resource deprivation also accounts for the Confederate South effect, and an interaction model indicates that the effect of this variable is significantly stronger in the non-South as predicted by the attenuation argument. Overall, these results suggest that both structural and cultural forces contribute to rural White homicide rates.  相似文献

We present a new method for solving asset pricing models, which yields an analytic price–dividend function of one state variable. To illustrate our method we give a detailed analysis of Abel's asset pricing model. A function is analytic in an open interval if it can be represented as a convergent power series near every point of that interval. In addition to allowing us to solve for the exact equilibrium price–dividend function, the analyticity property also lets us assess the accuracy of any numerical solution procedure used in the asset pricing literature.  相似文献
